Origin of Beergardens...
So you´re coming to Munich and maybe wondering why these Bavarians have so many beer gardens and how they came into existence?Beer gardens originated in Bavaria and came into existence due to a Bavarian law passed in 1539, which forbade the brewing of beer during the summer months. Therefore storage space was required for the beer which was to be consumed in summer. Beer was stored in subterranean caverns. Due to Munich’s high ground water the locals were unable to dig very deep cellars, so the beer was underground but getting warm (not a problem for an English man!). Chestnut trees were therefore planted to shade the area above the cellars. Ludwig 1st (1786-1868) permitted the locals to bring their own food – a rule that is still valid to this very day. In Munich alone, there are over 120 000 seats in Beer gardens! No visit to Munich is complete without sampling this unique beer drinking atmosphere.
Locals favourites include the Augustiner Keller and Hirschgarten.

This is not an urban myth, there are actually two permanet waves on the river Isar within the city.
